It would be a meet-cute if not for the fact that they’ve met many times and it’s never been cute. But instead of picnics in meadows, or run-ins with a handsome country doctor or bulging-forearmed bartender, Nora keeps bumping into Charlie Lastra, a bookish brooding editor from back in the city. Which is why she agrees to go to Sunshine Falls, North Carolina for the month of August when Libby begs her for a sisters’ trip away-with visions of a small town transformation for Nora, who she’s convinced needs to become the heroine in her own story. ![]() In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby. ![]() Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. Nora Stephens' life is books-she’s read them all-and she is not that type of heroine. ![]()

![]() ![]() The Masters El Morya and Koot Hoomi have had a special role in the formation and guidance of the society. Those masters at the lowest level of the hierarchy regularly interacted with humanity. ![]() At the same time, she pictured a hierarchy of Masters headed by a being known as the Solar Logos. Blavatsky taught that both individuals and the human race were engaged in an upward evolutionary process. ![]() The concept of ascended masters was popularly introduced by Madame Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, cofounder of the Theosophical Society, and described in some detail in her most important book, The Secret Doctrine. Ascended Masters are enlightened beings whom many in the esoteric field believe have evolved beyond the need to reincarnate on earth and now act from a higher plane of existence to assist humans in their movement toward enlightenment and guide the race in its destined evolution. ![]() ![]() ""If my life depended on it! Oh, god-I kill me!"") Two subplots emphasize the importance of honesty on the one hand (Charlie's beloved Uncle Bennie comes out of the closet) and tact on the other (Charlie's friend Gilbert, bald from chemotherapy, is deeply hurt by truthful comments about his appearance). ![]() The skull helps Charlie sort out his personal life and save some swamp creatures from extinction, telling bad jokes all the while (e.g., ""I couldn't tell a lie if my life depended on it,"" the skull explains. He comes away carrying a wisecracking human skull that forces him, and those around him, to tell the truth. In this moralistic fantasy, the third in the Magic Shop series that began with Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher, Charlie-passionate environmentalist and compulsive liar-stumbles on Mr. ![]() ![]() ![]() Yeah, there is a little bit of Huckleberry Finn in This Tender Land. So, they take off downriver in a canoe, hoping they’ll get to St. ![]() When the little girl’s mother is killed by a tornado (I don’t know that Minnesota is prime tornado territory, but I let it slide for the sake of the plot) the boys decide to flee the boarding school and take Emma with them, so she won’t have to live with the Black Witch, the woman who runs the boarding school. All very believable for a 1930s Indian boarding school. They leave because the boarding school is a horrible place to be, a callous institution of brutality, illegal activity, and the destruction of the culture of its Native American students. ![]() Only one of the boys is Native American, however, the other two are brothers, and the younger brother, Odie O’Banion, narrates the story. Three young men and a little girl, Emma, leave the Indian boarding school in Minnesota where they live. It’s 1932, the heart of the Great Depression.
